Unwanted Sales Calls After a U.S. Loan Application: Is Your Personal Information Being Exposed, and How Can You Protect Yourself?

During the loan application process, one of the standard requirements is that your loan officer will check the applicant’s credit history through the three major U.S. credit bureaus—Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. As a result, a record indicating that you are seeking a loan is “triggered” within the credit bureaus’ databases. Financial institutions that subscribe to this type of information may be notified that you are applying for a specific type of loan. These institutions may then purchase your phone number from third-party providers and contact you to market related products and services.

Therefore, if you unexpectedly receive many unsolicited sales calls after submitting a loan application, there is usually no need to be alarmed. In most cases, this is the reason. While you may not appreciate this type of marketing, it does not violate the provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

Does this mean that consumers have no way to prevent these annoying solicitation calls? Not at all. The solution is to take preventive action by opting out in advance. You can do so either online or by phone:

  • Visit www.OptOutPrescreen.com and complete a form providing your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and home address. The process takes about five minutes to complete and submit; or
  • Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT and provide the required information.

It is important to note that when a husband and wife apply for a loan jointly, both applicants should opt out if they wish to completely avoid receiving solicitation calls after submitting the loan application.
